TONY HANBURY & MIKE NICHOLS TAKE TOP HONORS AT COCA-COLA FALL SHOOTOUT

Tony Hanbury and Mike Nichols both continued their late-season success as they captured the headline events at the 5th annual Coca-Cola Fall Shootout at Wyoming County International Speedway.

Hanbury dominated the SST Modified Series Butch Drennen Memorial 75 as he led every lap after starting on the outside pole. It was his third-straight top two finish after winning the SST Series race at the Race of Champions and then finishing second at the U.S. Open.

Hanbury led all 75 green flag laps but he also led about another 50-75 laps under yellow, as there were 15 caution periods in the race.

“That was the longest race I think I’ve ever competed in for 75 laps,” Hanbury said.

It was not all smooth sailing for Hanbury, however, as T.J. Potrzebowski was a constant presence on his back bumper. The frequent caution periods kept the field bunched up, but Hanbury managed to pull away from Potrzebowski after each restart.

“When my tires were cool my car was really good,” Hanbury said, “and then the longer the run the better the car got.”

Potrzebowski entered the race just 15 points behind Kirk Rutherford for the SST Series championship. Rutherford started seventh in the 30-car field, but his trek to the front was derailed early on. He was involved in a couple of incidents the first of which happened on lap 23 when he was part of a multi-car crash. Potrzebowski benefited from Rutherford’s misfortune as his second place run gave him enough points to capture his second-straight SST Modified Series title.

“I love this SST Series and we’re proud to run it,” Potrzebowski said, “the way they do the points it gives a guy a chance to run all over the place.”

Jon Price finished third which gave him his third-straight top five SST Series finish to end the year. Price finished third at Oswego and fifth at Lancaster. Jason Hearne from New Egypt, NJ finished fourth in his first ever visit to the Perry Bullring. Joe Evans rounded out the top five.

Former WCIS track champion Wayne Lent finished sixth in his last race before retiring from racing. Mike Fiebelkorn Jr., Patti Pruitt, Kevin Lewis and Richard Thomas filled out the rest of the top ten. A track record of 32 SST Modifieds showed up for the event.

Mike Nichols captured the first annual Dave London Memorial Super Stock 50. The race paid tribute to 1998 Street Stock champion Dave London who passed away last year after a bout with cancer. His son, Jody, competes in the SST Modifieds at Spencer and is a frequent visitor to WCIS.

Nichols came from the 11th starting position to pass Jeff Goodwin for the lead with just seven laps to go. It was Nichols’s third win in a row after capturing the Super Stock races at the Race of Champions and the U.S. Open.

Goodwin started on the outside pole in his first ever visit to WCIS. He had to settle for a second place finish after leading the first 43 laps. Bobby Lippa Jr. finished third. WCIS regulars Tony Pangrazio and Kevin Herbert rounded out the top five.

Nik Welshans won the 20-lap 4-Cylinder Wasp feature. Welshans led all 20 laps but had to hold off a hard-charging Margaret McDonald. It was Welshans first ever win at the Perry Bullring. Eric Hastrieter finished third. Otis Bradshaw and Bill Verwys rounded out the top five.

Andy Jankowiak won the 15-lap Street Stock feature over Keith Flanigan and Jeff Guidotti. Kris Hamman won the Mini Cup feature.

Race fans helped to raise over $600 for the Spalding Foundation. The Spalding Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides money for individuals who are injured in race-related accidents.
