BOBBY HOLMES WINS FIRST MODIFIED FEATURE; SWEEPS OPEN-WHEELED CLASSES
Bobby Holmes continues to impress in his first season behind the wheel of the DeLange Racing Modified at Lancaster Raceway Park. Since taking over for Chuck Hossfeld, Holmes has not finished outside of the top ten and last Saturday night he would pick up the first Modified win of his career. On top of all that he would win in both open wheeled classes with his sixth win of the year in the Signworks SST Sportsman.
Holmes started second in the 30-lap Advance Auto Parts Modified feature alongside Ron Williams on the front row. Tim Mangus would lead early on after coming from the third starting spot. Holmes would fall into the second spot.
Disaster almost struck on lap four, as Holmes would bang bumpers with Dave Wollaber in turn three. Holmes had to fight the steering wheel coming off of turn four to keep the car going forward. Sege Fidanza got into the back of Wollaber after Wollaber slowed momentarily. It looked as if Fidanza had broke something on the left front wheel, but was able to slam on the brakes and straighten out the car to continue.
This incident allowed Mangus to open up his lead for a couple of circuits, but Holmes and Wollaber would reel him back in. On lap 10, Holmes pulled alongside Mangus as they raced down the frontstretch. One lap later Holmes would take the lead as he led a Modified race for the first time in his career.
Wollaber would also get by Mangus as the two young drivers would pull away from the field. Wollaber tried get by Holmes on several occasions but was denied each time.
By race’s end Wollaber had run out of time and tires as Holmes earned the first Modified checkered flag of his career. Tim Mangus, Tom McGrath, and Sege Fidanza would finish in the top five behind Holmes and Wollaber.
It would the second win of the night for Holmes, who won his sixth Signworks SST Sportsman feature of the year earlier in the night. Holmes got the better of Mike Mitchell on a lap seven restart to take the lead and then held off Justin Shepker in the final laps to get the win.
Holmes’ two wins in one night makes him second driver in as many years to accomplish the feat. It was the driver who finished second to him in the Modifieds that did it twice in 2004 as Dave Wollaber won a TQ Midget and a Modified feature in the same evening on two separate occasions last season.
In the Bobcat of Buffalo Late Models, John Julicher finally broke through for his first win of the season. Julicher dominated the event from the pole position, leading all 25 laps. It’s his 74th career Late Model win at Lancaster which is more than any other driver.
Tim Windnagle finished second for his best run of the year. Joe Carbone, Mike Ticco, and Mark Pennell rounded out the top five. T.J. Johnson finished eighth, snapping his three race win streak.
In victory lane, Julicher tried to do doughnuts on the front stretch with his primary car, however, he broke the clutch in the process. So he hopped out of that car into his second car, which was being driven by Glenn Attanasio, and put on a gigantic smoke show to the delight of the crowd.
Jay Mudra is beginning a late season push for the title in the Probity Construction Super Stocks. Mudra picked up his second-straight win and fourth of the year after blowing by A.J. Cole on a lap nine restart.
Point leader Wayne Bernhard finished second and maintains his lead in the standings by 25 points. Cole, Mike Scott, and Mark Hoch also finished in the top five.
Dave Johnson picked up his third win of the year in the Glen Campbell Chevrolet Street Stocks. Johnson caught John Shurmatz for the lead with just three laps to go and would get by him one lap later. Shurmatz held on for second. Frank Batista keeps his points lead with a third place run. Joe Mergl and Mike Maggiore rounded out the top five.
Next week, August 20, the TQ Midgets will be added to the race program for their final regular season event. Racing starts at 6:30 PM.
