LANCASTER HONORS DRIVERS AT 2004 AWARDS BANQUET

Lancaster Raceway Park paid tribute to the hard work of its drivers and teams with their annual Season Ending Awards Banquet at Samuel's Grand Manor in Clarence, NY. All six divisional champions were honored for their efforts as well as several individuals for their special achievements.

Taking home the most trophies was TQ Midget and Advance Auto Parts Modified champion, Dave Wollaber. Wollaber made history in 2004 by becoming the first driver in LRP history to win multiple titles in the same season. He was also bestowed the honor of Driver of the Year for 2004. It marks the second-straight year that Wollaber earns that title.

John Julicher added to his already historic career with his ninth Late Model championship. Julicher also earned a trophy for each hand as he also took one home for winning the AMSOIL Holland-Lancaster Late Model Challenge Series championship. His nine track titles ties him with Sege Fidanza for most ever by a LRP driver.

History was also made by our Bobcat of Buffalo Sportsman champ, Bobby Holmes. The six-time feature winner becomes the first third-generational champion in track history. His grandfather, Bob, and Uncle Ross won track titles during their careers.

Wayne Bernhard did not have to share the spotlight this year as Jerry Gradl Motors Super Stock champion. He tied for the title in 2003, but this year won the championship outright by a mere 17 points over Rich Skora.

Earning his first career track championship was Frank Batista, Jr. in Glen Campbell Chevrolet Street Stocks. Batista claimed two wins, including winning his first ever during 2004. He also finished in the top 10 in 16 of his 18 starts.

Several drivers were also honored for their on-track achievements in the Most Improved and Rookie of the Year categories. Most Improved drivers included, A.J. Hessler (TQ Midgets), Frank Batista, Jr. (Street Stock), Rich Skora (Super Stock), Justin Shepker (Sportsman), Mike Ticco (Late Models), and Tom McGrath (Modifieds). The top rookie drivers were, Dennis Pieczynski (Street Stock), Mark Hoch (Super Stock), Neal Dietz Jr. (Sportsman), Tim DiPasquale (Late Models), and Nick Cappelli (Modifieds).

The were also special awards for the accomplishments of their work behind the scenes and/or dedication to auto racing. Super Stock driver, Ed Collver, was given the Sportsmanship Award for his graciousness in victory and defeat. Engine builder and Crew Chief, Terry Edwards, was given the Mechanic of the Year Award. His cars recorded six wins and 13 top fives during the season. Late Model driver, Mark Pennell, took home the Perseverance Award.

The Skora Racing Team was given the Alex Friesen Spirit of Racing Award. Named after former LRP promoter, Alex Friesen, who passed away in 1996, the award is given to the person or persons who have the most fun and show the most spirit in the cheering of their driver.

Peter Tasca of Able Agency Insurance was given the Tommy Druar Contribution to Racing Award. Tasca has been a long time supporter of racing, especially in the entry level divisions. His business sponsors several race cars, and supports the FOAR Score 50/50 drawings by donating extra prizes to be given away. Able Agency is also a big supporter of the Street Stock lap sponsorship program during the US Open.

With the 2004 season now in the past and leaving its mark on the history of Lancaster Raceway Park, preparation has already begun for the 2005 campaign. Opening Day is just a short seven months away, so stay tuned to www.lancasterracing.com for updates throughout the off-season.
