PUTNEY, CAPPELLI, AND
OFFHAUS PICK UP SECOND WIN IN FIVE DAYS
By Dave Buchanan
The Lancaster Motorsports Park received its first
rain-free Saturday in 3 weeks giving race fans their second dose of racing
during the first week of June following Monday night’s exciting race
program. Three feature winners
from Monday would wind up back in victory lane for the second time in the same
week, while two drivers made long overdue returns to victory lane.
The first repeat winner was Billy Putney in the Visteon
Modifieds. Putney’s win on
Monday gave him a tie for the division points lead with Sege Fidanza, and
“Super Sege” was looking to break the tie with his first win of the year.
Fidanza took the lead from Kenny Troyer after a lap 12 restart and
looked like he was on his way to the win.
Putney was right behind him after moving into second on lap 13.
With six laps to go it looked as if no one could catch
Fidanza, but that was until Rich Littlefield and Sean O’ Neill tangled in
turn 3. Something broke on
Littlefield’s car, causing some fluid to be leaked on the track.
Fidanza hit the fluid and spun out in turn 3.
This turned the lead over to Putney.
He would cruise during the final 6 laps to become the first repeat
winner in the Modifieds this season. Fidanza
managed a ninth place finish, but lost major ground in the point standings.
In the Tops Markets Late Models, Tom Macleod overcame a
blown tire while leading on Monday night to capture his first win of the
season. Macleod kept all 4 wheels
inflated and held off a challenge from Joe Carbone on the final lap to secure
the win. Carbone takes over the
points lead in the Late Model, after pre-race leader Bobby Weber blew a motor
late in the race.
Nick Cappelli was the second repeat winner from Monday
night. Cappelli captured his
second-straight win the Bobcat of Buffalo Sportsman.
He chased down Justin Shepker to take the lead and then cruised the
rest of the way for the win. Shepker
wound up second, Kirk Rutherford was third, and Bobby Holmes and Ed Grimmer
completed the top five.
In the Jerry Gradl Motors Super Stocks, it was Jay Mudra
benefiting from a late-race bobble from Ed Collver to take the lead and take
his first win since opening night. Mudra
felt bad for preventing Collver from getting his first-ever win but he
couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Doug
Evans crossed the finish line second, Terry Weldy third, and Cory Sawyer
fourth. Collver drifted back and
wound up fifth.
Jim Offhaus made his fourth-straight trip to victory
lane in the Glen Campbell Chevrolet Street Stocks.
Offhaus has been unstoppable and shows no signs of slowing down in the
Big “O” Sealing #15. Originally,
Offhaus looked to have his streak snapped by Jason Lovell but following
post-race inspection Lovell was disqualified.
Tom Agen was awarded second place, and rookie Kyle Sharpe posted a
career-best third place finish.
Dave Wollaber won round 2 of the FM Communications TQ
Midget Series. The 2000 series
champion took the lead from Curtis Friesen around halfway in a 3-car battle
that also involved defending track champion Jared Turnbull.
Wollaber was hoping to add a Modified win later in the evening but a
came up one position short with a second place finish.
Next Saturday, June 14th, the monster trucks
of the WWE will invade the Lancaster Motorsports Park for a car-crushing show
in the infield. They will join a
full slate of professional stock car racing beginning at 6 PM.
